Urethral Stricture Management
A urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra caused by scar tissue, which restricts urine flow and can lead to serious urinary complications. Our Urethral Stricture Management service offers expert diagnosis and a range of surgical and minimally invasive treatments to restore normal urinary function.
Common Symptoms
- Weak or slow urine stream
- Straining to urinate
- Incomplete bladder emptying
- Spraying or split urine stream
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- Urinary retention in severe cases
- Pain during urination
Common Causes
- Previous urethral trauma or pelvic fracture
- Infections (gonorrhea, chlamydia)
- Prior urethral instrumentation or catheterization
- Inflammatory conditions (lichen sclerosus)
- Radiation therapy
- Idiopathic (unknown cause)
Diagnostic Evaluation
- Uroflowmetry to assess urine flow rate
- Retrograde urethrogram (RGU) and micturating cystourethrogram (MCU)
- Urethroscopy for direct visualization
- Ultrasound urethrogram for stricture length assessment
- Post-void residual urine measurement
Treatment Options
Treatment is selected based on stricture length, location, and recurrence:
- Urethral dilation (for short, recurrent strictures)
- Direct Vision Internal Urethrotomy (DVIU)
- Urethroplasty — the gold standard for long or recurrent strictures:
- End-to-end anastomotic urethroplasty
- Buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty
- Staged urethroplasty for complex cases
- Perineal urethrostomy for selected patients
Post-Treatment Care
- Regular uroflowmetry follow-up
- Urethroscopic surveillance for recurrence
- Patient education on self-catheterization if needed
- Long-term monitoring for optimal outcomes
